《胡適英文口述自傳》是胡適對(duì)自己一生學(xué)術(shù)研究的總結(jié)評(píng)價(jià)。20世紀(jì)50年代，胡適應(yīng)哥倫比亞大學(xué)“中國(guó)口述歷史學(xué)部”之請(qǐng)，受唐德剛采訪，以英文口述生平，總結(jié)一生學(xué)術(shù)思想，于1958年完成十六次正式錄音。英文文稿由唐德剛根據(jù)錄音整理而成，并于1959年經(jīng)胡適手訂。
《胡適英文口述自傳》中，從投身文學(xué)革命，到審視中國(guó)哲學(xué)史，到重新發(fā)現(xiàn)禪宗的歷史，再到批判性地研究白話小說(shuō)，憶及文學(xué)、史學(xué)、哲學(xué)等方面主要思想。 《胡適英文口述自傳》共分三部分：1）家庭與早年生活，2）在美國(guó)的學(xué)生生活（1910—1917），3）投身中國(guó)文藝復(fù)興事業(yè)。

The Personal Reminiscences of Dr. Hu Shih is a product of sixteen taped interviews done in 1958 with the assistance of Dr. Te-kong Tong, then a staff member of the Chinese Oral History Project of the East Asian Institute of Columbia University, and edited by Dr. Hu in 1959. It is a retrospective account of his fertile scholarly career more than a life history. He discusses the early influences that shaped his theories of literary reform. He then reflects on his analyses of early Chinese philosophy, his discoveries in the history of Ch'an (Zen) Buddhism, and his critical studies of major Chinese novels.
The manuscript is divided into three major sections: 1) Family and Early Life; 2) Student Days in the United States (1910-1917); 3) Working for a Chinese Renaissance. Although terminated by Dr. Hu's death, the autobiography retains his direct conversational style, polished by his own hand. It is the last extensive work in English by this eminent world figure.
胡適（1891－1962），安徽績(jī)溪人，因提倡文學(xué)革命、思想革命而成為新文化運(yùn)動(dòng)的領(lǐng)袖之一。興趣廣泛，著述宏富，在文學(xué)、哲學(xué)、史學(xué)等諸多領(lǐng)域都有開(kāi)創(chuàng)性的貢獻(xiàn)。歷任北京大學(xué)文學(xué)院院長(zhǎng)、中國(guó)駐美國(guó)大使、北京大學(xué)校長(zhǎng)、“中央研究院”院長(zhǎng)等職。
唐德剛（1920－2009），安徽合肥人，美國(guó)哥倫比亞大學(xué)博士，歷史學(xué)家、傳記文學(xué)家。著有《李宗仁回憶錄》、《胡適口述自傳》、《顧維鈞回憶錄》、《胡適雜憶》、《袁氏當(dāng)國(guó)》等，對(duì)口述歷史的發(fā)展有很大貢獻(xiàn)。
