Michael Shaara's account of the three most important days of the Civil War features deft characterizations of all of the main actors, including Lee, Longstreet, Pickett, Buford, and Hancock. The most inspiring figure in the book, however, is Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, whose 20th Maine regiment of volunteers held the Union's left flank on the second day of the battle. This unit's bravery at Little Round Top helped turned the tide of the war against the rebels. There are also plenty of maps, which convey a complete sense of what happened July 1-3, 1863.

邁克爾?夏拉（1928-1988）

意裔美國(guó)作家。大學(xué)畢業(yè)后曾在美國(guó)第82空降師服役，此后還做過(guò)拳擊手和警察。50年代開始創(chuàng)作小說(shuō)，主要作品有《決戰(zhàn)葛底斯堡》《破碎之地》《諾亞陰謀》《對(duì)游戲的愛》，其中《決戰(zhàn)葛底斯堡》獲1975年普利策小說(shuō)獎(jiǎng)。夏拉后來(lái)在佛羅里達(dá)州立大學(xué)謀得教職，教授文學(xué)課程。1988年，因心臟病猝發(fā)而死。
